off topic - ian barnard and chuck close

today i am sharing a quote [below]. you might want to google chuck close if you don't know anything about him. i chose his quote to go with this image. it would be a very nice way to address an envelope. you would need a chunky white paint marker. imagine it in landscape orientation.  chuck close does a lot of giant head shots.

the lettering is by ian barnard

“The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case.”

  1. I totally agree with this quote. The thing that drew me to Jean's website was her use of the word "stealworthy". It used to bother me a great deal when I would find "inspiration" if you will, in others work that I liked.

I would start out to somewhat steal the idea, which just seemed wrong...but, in the end my work never looked like the idea I was stealing, and most times not even close!

I think imitation is the nicest form of flattery....stealworthy!

  3. Wonderful advice. I've sat and thought and thought. Now, I'll sit and do and do.
